On 18 June 2022, A-ROSA Cruises’ game-changing new vessel, A-ROSA SENA, set sail on her maiden voyage, departing from Cologne, Germany. Debuting a hybrid propulsion system that combines electric and diesel engines, this next-generation river cruise ship is setting new standards and leading the way for the future of sustainable cruise travel, whilst providing a SENA-sational way to travel.
In this article, we dive into A-ROSA SENA’s stunning interiors, which were developed by JOI-Design, as well as the vessel’s sustainable new innovations.
Relaxation along the river
A-ROSA SENA boasts four decks of spacious interior public areas, plus a large sundeck featuring two pools for guests. The sundeck also includes a separate children’s pool as A-ROSA SENA is built to accommodate multi-generational passengers and families.
When not lounging on the sundeck and watching the world go by, passengers can also retreat to SPA-ROSA for some much-needed relaxation. This tranquil spa contains a Finnish sauna, jacuzzi, two treatment rooms where guests can receive a range of beauty treatments and massages, a relaxation room containing heated benches for unwinding between sauna sessions, and even a luxurious ice grotto featuring an elegant ice fountain. The SPA-ROSA also encourages guests to stay hydrated and fuelled between treatments at the self-service bar.
SPA-ROSA also provides a state-of-the-art gym larger than any on the existing fleet. The gym offers various options, allowing passengers to customise their routines. Guests can choose to work out independently while enjoying the scenery as it passes by. Alternatively, they can access a library of workouts using ‘Life Fitness on Demand’ with guidance and instruction from trainers. Guests can also link workout equipment to their smart devices to ensure their onboard exercise activity is logged.
Entertainment galore
Other onboard activities include the dedicated Kids Club, Treasure Island, which has a pirate theme and includes a slide, climbing and cave areas, craft and painting corners and a relaxation area with large cushions designed to look like stones. The vessel also boasts multiple lounges and bars, a stage and dance floor, and a multi-purpose activity area.

Destination inspired dining
Guests can look forward to a whole new world of culinary pleasures and restaurant areas serving destination-inspired foods. The vessel’s main restaurant, A-ROSA Market, includes a gourmet buffet, as well as various live cooking stations. A-ROSA Market’s design was inspired by the various market halls found in the large cities A-ROSA SENA calls to. These include Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Dordrecht and Antwer. Here, guests can get a taste of local dishes from each region to further their immersion.

Spacious cabins for passengers of all ages
A-ROSA SENA can accommodate more families than ever before, with 12 spacious cabins that sleep up to five, a river cruise first. These are located alongside the kids’ club in the ‘family area’ of the ship on deck 1. These 28m2 cabins have been creatively designed to feature a large double bed, bunk beds with port holes and curtains for little ones and a sofa bed. They also include a play area, a bathroom with a shower and two sinks, a separate toilet and a toy box in every cabin filled with age-appropriate toys for younger guests. A-ROSA’s dedication to multigenerational cruisegoers is also reflected in the itinerary, as the cruise line has designed exciting cruise excursions to be enjoyed by the whole family.

All staterooms on board A-ROSA SENA are more spacious than other river cruise ships, with standard cabins being 21m2. Each cabin is divided into separate sleeping and living areas and contains a balcony with seating for two people.
Paving the way for more sustainable cruise travel
A-ROSA SENA debuts an innovative new hybrid propulsion ‘E-Motion’ system. As a result, the vessel is equipped with both a diesel engine and an electric engine, as well as a battery storage system. While sailing, A-ROSA SENA uses every litre of diesel as efficiently as possible, since its engines can always run at their optimal operating point. However, when approaching a port, A-ROSA SENA switches over to its battery-powered electric engine. This allows for virtually silent and emission-free port calls. The battery can be charged while the ship is sailing or via a suitable onshore power supply.
A-ROSA SENA has already been recognised for its industry-leading innovations, receiving the prestigious ‘German Award for Sustainability Projects 2022’.
