Eumar’s ‘Split X’ washbasin, designed with cruise ship interior spaces in mind

As cruise ship suppliers know, cruise ships have unique requirements that can challenge even the most experienced of hospitality industry suppliers. When TUI cruises subsidiary Marella Cruises refurbished the former Celebrity Century & SkySea Golden Era to become Marella Explorer 2, Eumar were contracted to deliver passenger cabin bathroom washbasins, faucets, furniture, mirrors and even bathtubs.

Eumar were committed to not only delivering the best possible design product but being involved in the design process from an early stage. Their bathroom series, ‘Split’, had already won the iF Design Award 2017 in the category of Discipline Product. The judgement criteria for this award was aesthetics, design quality, practical use and ergonomics and on those fronts ‘Split’ certainly delivers. ‘Split’ was specifically designed to install a combination of beauty and utility into micro spaces and was recognised by iF as saving space “stylishly and effectively”.

However, Eumar did not rest on an already-internationally recognised design, noting that cruise ship bathrooms would have different stressors to other hospitality bathrooms. In particular they identified how heavy weather conditions at sea may affect the interaction between passengers’ possessions and the bathroom units. Product designers working in the cruise industry have to consider movement when designing their product in a way that few other hospitality sectors do.

To ensure their product achieved peak performance Eumar created a new member of the Split family, the ‘Split X’. This design incorporated a gorgeous upstand all-around that ran the perimeter of the washbasin, ensuring passengers’ cosmetic amenities would remain safe in turbulent conditions. Eumar commented, “we believe it is a must-have function in the cruise ship bathroom”.

Marella Explorer 2 is an adult-only ship which set sail for her maiden voyage under her new name and with a fresh design in April 2019.

Eumar will be exhibiting on Stand 320.
