Saga have announced plans to launch a new river cruise ship, slated to sail on European rivers in Spring 2021. The Spirit of the Rhine has been described by Saga as a ‘boutique’ river cruise ship and is set to complement Saga’s current and upcoming boutique ocean cruise ships, Spirit of Discovery and Spirit of Adventure.

Spirit of the Rhine will echo her sister ships in luxury and attention to detail. Saga have reported that most of the 17 square metre cabins will feature French balconies and floor-to-ceiling windows, while the crown jewel of the public spaces –a large sun deck, jacuzzi, barbeque and seating area – will also allow guests to revel in the up-close scenery. Other onboard facilities will include a sumptuous lounge with bar, a library area, small gym and two restaurants, one of which that will feature show cooking. In what may be recognition of the trend for connectivity, no matter the demographic, free wifi will be available throughout the ship.

Saga have released early renderings of cabin and public spaces. Although all they warn that all plans and décor may be subject to change, it is possible to get a sense of the chic elegance that Saga intend to offer. Rich colours in lightly textured fabrics complement wood-effect detail and mid-century shapes in the current renderings. The resulting effect is Saga’s signature style of on-trend timelessness.

Saga have used their expertise in their corner of the cruise market to hone their river cruise offerings. They have tracked the increase of popularity of river cruising with their customers to form the basis of their take on luxury boutique river cruise, both in style and itinerary. Spirit of the Rhine is scheduled to sail on rivers including the Rhine, Moselle, Main and Danube, in addition to the waterways of Holland.

The new ship will be built by Vahali, a Dutch-founded company who have been building rivers ships since 1923 and has constructed some of the finest river cruise ships afloat.

Robin Shaw, CEO Saga Travel said: “I am delighted to announce that we are using our experience in ocean cruising to design a bespoke ship for those guests who want a luxurious, boutique river cruise experience.

This launch of Spirit of the Rhine heralds a step change in the future of river cruising and when it comes to the onboard experience, our boutique approach to cruising will ensure that our guests have an experience that combines unrivalled, first class service with bespoke authentic experiences that are tailored just for them..”
