Svein Fürstenberg
Founder | Amfi Top
Svein Fürstenberg has worked with the material Solid Surface for more than 20 years, since 1998.
Solid Surface is a composit material which consist of 70 percent ATH (aluminium trihydrate) and 30 percent polymers, and it has a quality quite similar to aluminium.
Before the year 2000 Solid Surface was only made as simple plates, under trade mark like Corian.
The plates were made in USA, and imported to Europe where carpenter firms could use and refine them.
In 1998 Svein Fürstenberg started his work towards developing a new generation of the Solid Surface material.
Fürstenberg came across a new process which enables small scale production of the material. By casting Solid Surface from raw-materials it is possible to create a Solid Surface product by the costumers design.
With this new production method Fürstenberg founded the Solid Surface production company AmfiTop, and in 2000 he started a Solid Surface factory in East-Germany, producing worktops, sinks and furniture.
In 2011 the production was moved to Riga, Latvia, and focused mainly towards offshore and hotel markets.
In 2013 Fürstenberg started developing the now patented prefabricated bathroom-floors casted in Solid Surface, mainly for ships and hotels purpose.
Svein Fürstenberg lives with his family in Bergen, Norway.

Design Forecasting
The design cycle of cruise ship interiors means that concepts & inventory are set a number of years before those vessels come into service. For a design to be long-lasting, it is important to take into account a number of parameters in relation to design forecasting.
- Design forecasting: some techniques
- Ensuring cruise ship interiors look for longevity
- What are the social influences in our societies and why is hotel design different from ship design – and is there a common base?
- Where does inspiration come from, and how do designers translate the future trends into their own design?
- What elements of design are most susceptible to going out of fashion?
- Creating layers of design: what are the broader societal developments?
- Considerations for design elements – room layout, floors, walls, furniture, art, lighting fabric – everything which is put into a space
- Color trends – palettes, patterns, textures
- Covering; durability, price, weave, cleanability, quality, cost

Design Imperatives for Expedition Interiors
Expedition cruise interiors design is something of an unique juxtaposition between minimalism as defined by space limitations, luxury demanded by clients who often choose expedition as part of a bucket list special holiday, and the use of ‘toys’ which demand both space to store and the practical space in which guests can transition from interior to a harsh exterior when out on excursions.
- Space considerations to allow for effective operations
- Designing for durability at sea in remote, harsh locations
- Design for environmental protection, Polar Code and restrictions
- Enabling guests to submerge themselves in the expedition experience: designing access to the ‘toys,’ and creating broader opportunities for experience
- Use of appropriate materials with good sustainability credentials
- What are the parameters for designing facilities to prepare for the experience (mud-rooms, marina, heli-lounge etc)?
- Reflecting the feel of the expedition and nature in the cruise ship design features, e.g. artworks which evoke the sense of the expedition
